The sisterhood wasn’t as evident in this book and that was one of the things I loved about the Wolf Den. I enjoyed the author’s exploration of the power dynamics in Ancient Pompeii, not just between slave and owner, but also between men and women in the patriarchal society. The themes from The Wolf Den run throughout this book, including body autonomy and the quest to be truly free. She was beholden to her patron and realised she needed to start looking after herself. I admired Amara’s tenacity and strength as she realised her “freedom” was precarious and completely dependent on a man’s whim. Some of her decisions were questionable but I always understood her motivation. She was still reckless and impulsive but she learnt to become cunning and resilient. I enjoyed Amara’s development as she became a more complex and nuanced character. I particularly enjoyed the scenes where the streets were bustling and I could clearly imagine the colours and the sounds.
